About

WordPlay Editing is home to two exceptional editors: Sarah Dawson and Lucas Abegglen. Learn more about them below!

Sarah Dawson:

For nearly a decade, I have worked with both corporate and independent authors to perfect their writing prior to its publication. As a freelancer, located in San Diego, CA, the services I offer include proofreading, copyediting (light, medium, and heavy; also known as line editing), substantive editing (also known as structural editing), rewriting, and writing. Whatever the type of service I provide, I consider myself a liaison between author and reader; my job is to convey the author’s message to the reader in the clearest, most pleasing way possible.

Among my particular areas of expertise are educational materials and child and young adult literature. My background as an educator and a school librarian gives me unique insight into how to make such writing exceptional.

I have also worked extensively with corporate writers, working on text for use in marketing, employee education, and websites.

I welcome all inquiries. Let me know how I can help perfect your writing!Sarah Dawson

Lucas Abegglen:

My five years of editing experience have taught me the value of each author’s unique voice and the importance of making sure that voice communicates effectively with readers. It is the challenge of helping each writer find that superior voice that gives me my passion for copyediting. As my casual editing work for friends and family turned into commissioned line editing under the direction of Sarah Dawson, I decided to take my passion seriously and am currently enrolled in UCSD’s copyediting certificate program.

With roots as a musician, including a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music composition, I am especially familiar with music literature and how to make it accessible to musicians and non-musicians alike. Beyond that, my compositional background provides me with an advantage in editing most types of creative writing, as I have firsthand knowledge of what it takes to tell a story through art.

I also have experience editing academic, corporate, political, and fiction writing. In all my editing work, I try to find creative ways to help authors recognize the genre, scope, and intended audience of their work, and then help them find the most effective writing to achieve their literary goals.

I welcome all inquiries. Let me help you find your distinctive voice!

  1. Hi Sarah,

I have a 110,000 word manuscript that needs editing. It’s a memoir of my life as a Federal Agent with the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement. I had a ghostwriter/ College English Professor assisting me on this. I just want it to be the best it can be. I would hope that you would be able to help me get this to the highest level before printed in book form. I live in Dana Point, CA. My contact number is (951) 533-2800. Thanks
